How Urgent Is Treatment for myopia?
It is often thought that myopia has begun long before the first pair of glasses are worn. The earlier the treatment is begun, the sooner the eye slows its elongation. Not only does that ensure a smaller risk of eye disease in the future, it reduces the resultant myopic prescription in the future. So sooner is always better, but remember it’s never too late to introduce myopia control options, as every millimetre of eye length growth inhibited now means a healthier future eye!
How Young Can You Start?
There is no minimum age to any of the treatment options on offer to slow myopia progression. Some children prefer to wear contact lenses to be free of glasses during the day, others are better wearing specialised glasses or using medicated eye drops. But all options are discussed during a consultation so that the best option for both the child and the family is selected. And these treatment options are reviewed every 6 months and treatment modalities can be changed as the child gets older and life changes too.
Can Kids Wear Contact Lenses?
Of course children can wear contact lenses! Having personally fitted contact lenses to children as young as 6 weeks old, there is no eye or prescription that cannot be fitted with a contact lens. Personally, I find children easier to teach contact lens handling techniques too, as they are open to learning new things more than adults are. However, some children are more suited to glasses so the aim of the Myopia Clinic is to have an option that suits every child and family that visits us.
